Rulon® and Meldin® Materials for Automotive ApplicationsRulon and Meldin Products for Automotive Applications

The automotive market is constantly searching for new materials and solutions to accelerate technical innovations, meet new environmental and safety legislation, and satisfy emerging customer needs.  Compact, under-the-hood designs require components that can withstand loads and temperatures that are higher than ever before.

Fortunately, components fabricated from our Meldin materials offer tailor-made solutions.  Meldin components are also used in critical, brake sensor assemblies to help ensure the safety of drivers, passengers, and other precious cargo.  Our Rulon parts with their low friction characteristics, long wear properties, and high chemical resistance are used in emission control systems, shock absorbers, and steering assemblies.

Case Study

Application:  Automotive Transmission
Material:  Meldin® 1357

Features / Benefits
  • Low friction
  • Magnetically Insulating
  • No stick-slips
  • Reduced assembly
  • Low wear
  • Meldin® 1357 is a good choice of low-friction material to run against a mild steel shaft.  This injection-moldable material provides excellent wear life with solid bearing material walls, superior to thin coated bearings.  This one-piece flanged bearing replaced two parts:  a magnetically insulating thrust washer and a separate bushing.  This reduced assembly costs and part count.

Case Study

Application:  Emissions Control Sensor and Automobile Throttle Position Sensor
Material:  Rulon®  123C

Features / Benefits
  • Low friction
  • Consistent hysteresis
  • No stick-slips
  • Self-energized ceiling
  • Low wear
  • Rulon® 123C is a good choice because it is compliant enough to provide a good seal with low frictional properties, yet it is compatible enough with the relatively soft polymer shaft that it does not cause undue wear to the mating shaft material.

Case Study

Application:  Diesel Engine
Material:  Meldin® 1003

Features / Benefits:
  • Complex piston ring shapes can be made economically due to material being injection moldable
  • Material has good wear properties
  • Mating surface is not attacked by this material
  • Material improves diesel engine emissions performance
  • Material reduces vehicle weight

Case Study

Application:  Air Conditioning Scroll Compressor
Material:  Meldin® 1003

Features / Benefits:
  • Provides increased wear life over PTFE material-based parts
  • Provides a low coefficient of friction
  • Cost competitive -- parts are injection molded
  • Material maintains its physical properties due to its chemical resistance
