Meldin® Thermoplastic Materials
Meldin Polyimide and Thermoplastic Materials

Meldin® is a comprehensive group of high-performance thermoplastic materials, produced and sold exclusively by Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics. Meldin thermoplastic materials are typically used in applications where service conditions exceed the limits of conventional materials.  Typically these applications involve extreme temperatures or pressure, speed, aggressive chemicals, as well as strict needs for electrical or thermal insulation. The base resins that we use in our compounds result in three product families within the Meldin thermoplastic product line: Meldin 1000, Meldin 3100, and Meldin 5000.

The Meldin® 1000 product family is based on a polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) matrix. We have added our proprietary formulations of fillers to enhance the performance. In this way, we have created four different standard compounds in this product family: Meldin 1003, Meldin 1277, Meldin 1357, and Meldin 1380. Details on these grades can be found in the Document Center or at right. Applications vary widely and range from scroll seals over bushings to piston rings. Typically these compounds are used in applications with a temperature range from 150°C to 205°C (300°F to 400°F).

The Meldin® 3100 family is tailored to provide the best-in-class wear and friction performance for thrust washers and piston ring applications. In-house tests indicate that this product family can offer the lowest wear (longest life) of all polymer compounds that have ever been tested in our laboratories. Based on a proprietary alloy, the Meldin 3100 family really is the state-of-the-art polymer for any new piston ring or thrust washer application that requires an injection molding solution. Like the Meldin 1000 family, the Meldin 3100 family is comprised of four grades, each one with its specific performance properties. Meldin 3100 compounds can be used in a maximum temperature of 220°C (428°F).

Whenever top performance is required from a thermoplastic material, design engineers have a limited number of choices. PEEK™ is one of the few top thermoplastic materials able to operate above 230°C (445°F), and Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics has adopted this base resin as its backbone for the Meldin 5000 product family. Generally the market offers only four standard PEEK grades.  However, Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics has developed six proprietary formulations that can address application challenges where the standard PEEK compounds are not able to provide an adequate solution.

Meldin® Thermoplastic Injection Molded Gears and Gerotors

Meldin® gears and gerotors are approved for business machines, coating pumps, appliances, automobiles, motorsport vehicles, and more.

Meldin® Piston Rings

Meldin® piston rings are in use inside heavy-duty transmissions for agricultural equipment and off-road vehicles, as well as in hydraulic motors and passenger car automatic transmissions. They successfully replace traditional piston rings made of cast iron or other plastics materials, adding increased functionality and extended longevity to the application.
